Case Study: Car smash crashes Scott’s wedding plans

Scott West*, 25, from Noosa Heads in Queensland, had just started a new job. His mother lent him money to buy a car. He and his girlfriend planned to marry. Life was good.

Scott’s mum told him to insure the new car, but it wasn’t a priority for Scott. He assured his mum he’d "get around to it", but forgot.

One wet night he lost control of the car and crashed into an ambulance parked by the side of the highway. Fortunately, no one was in the ambulance. Scott was lucky his injuries were slight, but financially he was devastated.

Without insurance, Scott had no way to pay back the money his mother had lent him and had to pay more than $100,000 for repairs to the damaged ambulance and its high-tech equipment.

The wedding is now on hold while Scott saves up to pay the damages bill ... and he’s catching the bus to work.

Had Scott discussed his insurance needs with a broker he would have received professional advice to ensure he was covered for damage to his own car and other vehicles. Contact an IBNA broker today to discuss your insurance requirements.
